Kayak Put-In Info for: Middle Harbor Park, Oakland
Overview: This a not only a great place to launch a kayak at High Tide but also a very under utilized and well maintained recreation area. Great views of the bay, the bridge, and SF are everywhere you look. Also a great place to view lots of wildlife, especially birds.
Parking: lots of it and its free. one large lot and one small lot. the small lot is immediately West of the large white ship Mast. this is where you'll want to park.
Facilities: There are lots of open grass areas, seating, benches in the sand looking towards SF, showers, clean bbq pits, lots of shade, ample free parking, trails, an observation tower overlooking the bay, great views abound, and clean bathrooms. the one drawback is that our year round Canadian Geese love this place and with that you'll see a good amount of goose poop on some areas of the grass.
Amenities: see Facilities above
Directions: From Oakland. get on 7th street and head North several miles towards the port of Oakland. Keep going even when you think you've gone too far and you'll see a large sign to your left that says Middle Harbor Park. The large parking lot is right behind the sign, the smaller lot is to the left.
Cautions: DO NOT try to launch your kayak here unless it's High Tide or close to it. This area is a very shallow cove which is really a marsh area at low tide. There is very thick and deep mud during low tide that will make it close to impossible to launch. At high tide it's a sandy beach. You may want to also consider bringing a Kayak cart as the path from the parking lot to the beach is about 2 blocks long.
